Belgian banker Juan van Wassenhove lives in a 150-year-old Qing dynasty courtyard house in the heart of Beijing, near the Forbidden City. Such enclosed, one-storey quadrangles, or siheyuan, were common in old Beijing, but are today being bulldozed into oblivion to make way for wider roads and modern high-rises.
Van Wassenhove‘s house is accessed through hutongs, Beijing‘s signature winding lanes that used to number in the thousands. These lanes still offer glimpses of a community-oriented life played out in public areas.
As with most siheyuans, Van Wassenhove‘s 300-square-meter (3,228-sq-ft) home comprises inward facing rooms set around a courtyard — or, in his case, two courtyards. Designed according to the rules of feng shui and the Confucian tenets of order and hierarchy, it offers refuge from the cacophony of modern day Beijing. The inward facing design also protects residents from harsh winter winds and summer dust storms.
Decoratively, Van Wassenhove draws on the treasures of old Beijing to create a colorful interior. These include 1950 vintage black-and-white photographs from flea markets and retro armchairs from villas once occupied by Communist Party cadres; Cultural Revolution memorabilia and Xinjiang carpets; an antique latticework canopy bed, and tiny green wooden hutong chairs.
Seated in his courtyard, Van Wassenhove says, "Here I am in the center of the city yet feel as though I am in the countryside. I don‘t have to escape at the weekends if I have here."
