ENR的报道
A new $1-billion natural gas and oil production platform flirting with disaster in the Gulf of Mexico was regaining its feet July 19 as emergency crews managed to pump out two flooded hulls and ease it upright.
Workers had been scrambling since the evening of July 13 to save Thunder Horse, the world’s largest offshore platform. A passing ship July 11 reported the empty rig listing 20° on its moorings 150 miles southeast of New Orleans in 6,050 feet of water. The crew had been evacuated with the approach of Hurricane Dennis, a Category 4 storm that whipped by early on July 10. The Coast Guard believes the storm did not cause the problem, says spokesman Adam Wine.
"There was no physical damage to the platform due to the hurricane. It was not a direct cause," Wine says. The Coast Guard suspects an internal malfunction, Wine says.
Thunder Horse is 45 stories high and a moored semi-submersible modularized platform with integrated production, drilling and living facilities. The hull was designed by GVA Consultants, Göteborg, Sweden, and built by the Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering division of Daewoo, Okpo Bay, South Korea. Displacement is 129,000 tonnes. It was shipped to Texas, where last year it was joined with its 21,000-ton topside decks. J. Ray McDermott Inc. was lead builder of the decks. The rig was installed early this year.
Rescuers found two of its four hulls swamped. Power was restored and pumping started after the hulls’ integrity was confirmed and the Coast Guard cleared owner British Petroleum’s plan of action.
Work went cautiously, however. "The water had to be pumped out slowly to prevent destabilizing the vessel," says Wine. Anxiety also rose as Hurricane Emily began to move toward the Gulf.
Crews were spared significant Emily-related complications. Christopher Burr, chief of the tropical analysis and forecasting branch at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says seas around the platform were only "8-ft chop" as Emily tracked across the western Gulf toward South Texas. By contrast, Hurricane Dennis produced waves in the 35-ft to 40-ft range created by sustained winds of 135 mph as that storm passed the platform.
BP brought in SMIT, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on July 15 to lead the recovery effort. A total of 70 firms assisted, with 15 ships and more than 700 workers on site at the peak of operations.
